The small town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is located just under 30 miles northwest of Madrid. Its quaint style is reflected in the lush surrounding mountainside. The principal attraction of this city is the astounding 16th century complex built by King Felipe II. It is a work of architectural genius, and the result is far beyond a royal palace. It is a massive monument built for a king, and consists of not only the King’s residence but also an ornamented church, a world-renowned library, a monastery, and a royal mausoleum, the final resting place for most of Spain’s royalty.
