Hangzhou

One of the seven ancient capitals of China, Hangzhou is a center of religious diversity in China, home to one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals and one of the oldest Islamic mosques in China. Perhaps the most famous site in Hangzhou is the West Lake, a popular scenic vacation spot with vibrant blossoming lotus flowers and crystal clear waters. The West Lake has been an important geographic icon throughout Chinese history, as evidenced by numerous temples that have dotted its shores for 1,500 years.

Water Villages of Jiangsu

China's famous Water Villages are known as the "Venices of the East,” and it is easy to get lost in the beauty of the extensive waterways and colorful gardens. The labyrinthine network of canals has had tremendous historical importance in Chinese culture and commerce. Visitors travel in traditional boats down the river and under the carved stone bridges of Jiangsu province, stopping to eat and shop in the main village of Zhujiajiao.

The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, a necessary visit for anyone wishing to understand the complex relationship between China and Japan, reveals one of the darkest events in China's long history. Nanjing is also home to the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is considered the father of modern China, as well as the Confucius Temple.

Weekend Host Family Experience

Local Shanghainese host families will host students for one weekend during the day on Saturday and Sunday. This excursion provides a unique opportunity to observe firsthand and participate in the day-to-day living habits of a Chinese family. Activities will vary among families and may include cooking and eating traditional meals, playing traditional family games, visiting local markets and other cultural activities.
